An aviation welder is a highly skilled journey level welder, specifically trained to work with aircraft structures and special materials using tungsten inert gas and metal inert gas techniques, as well as laser and plasma welding.
As an Aviation Welding Technician you might work with alloys of nickel, aluminum, titanium, cobalt, stainless steel and carbon steel and you always have to meet the highest standards in terms of quality and safety. Theoretical knowledge of basic metallurgy and aircraft structures is a necessity, as is an ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and technical drawings. Good hand-eye coordination and mathematical skills are essential as is your attention to details, excellent teamwork and above-average communication skills.
Education
Professionals in this trade need a high school diploma and must complete a rigorous on-the-job training program. Specialized aviation welders require a college diploma or high school education coupled with additional experience and credentials. See the College and University section for more information.
